Before he left in 2006, David had lived an apparently unremarkable life in south-west London, working as a croupier, a taxi controller for a mini-cab company, a baker and a train driver for the London Underground.
With my hand still smarting, we went up to see the new control cab, where eight to nine controllers work in a glass-enclosed 850-square-foot aerie, almost twice the size of the old cab.
"Originally I just wanted the controller from a cab," Mr. Kronenberg said.

Work is currently being undertaken in one site involving cab design modifications to determine optimum driver interface with the master controller and foot pedal based on the findings to date with the aid of mock-ups.
Industrial ergonomics literature has identified E/HF issues in the design of tram cabs and suggested improvements, particularly for the primary speed/brake throttle controller (also known as the master controller), and "deadman" safety features (i.e. safety devices that operate if the driver is incapacitated) [16].
A pseudo-derivative feedback (PDF) controller is applied to obtain a velocity pattern of the cab that proves to be close to the given one.
"You got to talk to some of these guys like they're kindergartners," says a controller, Leslie Warfield, a Texan whose four-year tour in the Cab has given her major New York attitude.
