In Australia, most healthcare-associated MRSA is caused by 1 clone defined by multilocus sequence type (ST) 239; this clone is characteristically resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents, including gentamicin (3, 12).
The isolates were typed by multilocus sequence type (MLST), protein A gene type (spa typing), antimicrobial drug resistance profiling, and toxin and resistance gene analysis.
This selection included the original strain isolated by George Canetti of sequence type A (STB-A) and an isolate from the most prevalent group of sequence type D (STB-D 9, STB-D 9 as strains from the most distant sequence types STB-L, STB-J and STB-K (Fig. 1 and Supplementary Fig. 1). We could not find any other studies specifically designed to address the question of variable HCW MRSA carriage rates by sequence type.
One cc23 isolate was not fully characterized by sequence type (ST) because existing primers failed to amplify the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase gene (gdh) locus.
The distribution of isolates harboring erm(B) and mef(A) genes by sequence type was 33% for ST320, 32% for ST236, 12% for ST271, 8% for ST81, 2% for ST283 and ST8525, and 11% for other sequence types (Table 3).
