As shown in Fig. 2, the STM tip has a rapid decrease in curvature over a short distance which is required by surface probing, while the needle electrode prefers a long and gradual taper towards the apex which helps to reduce the fluctuation in the surface electric field.
Additionally, a complete coverage of the surface by probe molecules is detrimental to a fast response time of the sensor, as many target molecules will not be able to interact with the probe molecules.
