The start positions of the genes were determined in two ways: (i) the same position was predicted as a start position by two or more programmes, or (ii) when all three programmes differently predicted start positions, the preferred was chosen from the software in the following order: GeneMarkS, MetaGeneAnnotator, and GLIMMER3.
All four programmes were designed by the college and are validated by the Scottish university.
We determined the number of crosses made by these three programmes in a defined period and the number of releases in an equivalent but later period to allow for about an 8-year lag phase.
The ranking results produced by three programmes revealed that in brain, heart, liver, muscle, spleen and head kidney, respectively, 28S rRNA/TUB, 28S rRNA/TUB, RPL30/28S rRNA/ELF-1A, RPL30/TUB/ELF-1A, ELF-1A/28S rRNA/RPL30 and ELF-1A/TUB gene pairs were highly stable and may suffice the requirements of RGs (Table 6).

However, it is worth noting, SNPs/indels identified commonly by three programmes covered only 60% of the total number of mutations.
