The atrioventricular node and bundle of His represent important supraventricular control points in the heart that distribute impulses to the ventricles via the right and left bundle branches.
The pacemaker activity is propagated to the rest of the heart by means of the low electrical resistance pathways through the muscle cells (e.g., intercalated disks) and the presence of specialized conducting tissue (e.g., bundle branches and the Purkinje system).
Specialized connections between conduction cells in the heart allow the electrical impulse to travel rapidly from the atria to the atrioventricular node and bundle of His (known as the atrioventricular junctional tissue), through the bundle branches and Purkinje fibres (known as the ventricular conduction system), and into the ventricular muscle cells that ultimately generate cardiac output.
In contrast to atrial and ventricular myocytes, the myocytes of the sinoatrial (SA) node, the atrioventricular (AV) node, the bundle branches, and the Purkinje fibre system are made up of specialized cardiac muscle cells that exhibit a spontaneous upward drift in the resting potential toward Ecrit, resulting in the generation of the action potential with all of its phases.
However, previous studies (38) in the Scn5a+/− mice have shown that conduction velocity in the bundle branches was not affected and fibrosis and connexin 40 expression in the bundle branches was also unchanged.
Cx43 is expressed in the penetrating bundle (PB), His bundle, and bundle branches in humans and rabbits at least.
