What people think they want, and how they react to a working product, are two entirely different things and you have to be aware of that when you're building a product, to not build too much before putting it in people's hands.
Builders built too much, lenders lent too much, and people bought too much.
"We probably built too much optimism in too quickly," said Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab.
Builders built too much during the boom, and the mania for second and third homes has sharply diminished.
"You don't want to build too much into their heads," said Dianne Carter, a second-grade teacher at the Hutchinson School.
"We've got to get back to flying; we've built too much of our infrastructure around it," Mr. Rice said.
Having built too much backbone in the boom of the late 1990s, they now find their problems compounded by their networks' fibre-optic technology.
As developers don't like to build too much too quickly, the pace of growth is unlikely to be much above 1,000 a year, or about 0.4% of estimated national need.
The bottom line is that we may lose the red knot, and all fingers point to us: too many horseshoes harvested, too many beachfront condos built, too much global warming.
"Those traders that had been buying on hopes for a 50-basis-point cut decided they built too much" optimism into prices, said Steve Smith, head of government bond trading at Dain Rauscher Inc. in Minneapolis.
