We then measured the area of glossy privet in a series of 200-m buffers at increasing distances around urban areas in 1983 and 2006, and compared it with the amount of privet expected in proportion to buffer area.
If reclassification of land cover habitats was appropriate, then the reclassified habitat types in the buffer areas surrounding recent records should be mainly in categories 3 and 4. We also assessed the habitats in the buffer areas around historical records to detect whether they have already been transformed into unsuitable environmental conditions.
That between 31% and 42% of the habitat in buffer areas around recent records belongs to categories of unsuitable habitat reflects that some of our "recent" records were collected 25 years ago.
