C. albicans also responds to a quorum factor produced by P. aeruginosa (3-oxo-C12 homoserinelactone) by restricting its growth to the budding pattern, thereby protecting it from being killed since budding cells are not attacked by P. aeruginosa.
There may also be cooperation between budding cells, because in a mosaic epithelium, cells that cannot respond to the chemoattractant, or respond only poorly, allow other cells in the epithelium to move ahead of them.
Moreover, yeasts possess glucanase encoding genes within their genomes, for these enzymes are needed to restructure the cell wall and to separate the budding cells from the mother cell (Baladrón et al. 2002; Martín-Cuadrado et al. 2003).
