The book seamlessly joins three narrative threads: the brutal 16th-century conquest of the Incas by the Spanish conquistadors and the subsequent retreat of the rebellious ruler, Manco Inca, into a series of jungle redoubts; Bingham's 1911 expedition that retraced Manco's flight; and Adams's own mishap-filled recreation of Bingham's trip a century later.
It's a far cry from the short, sharp winter flurries that cripple the UK for a few days each winter: a third of Russia's population lives in a subarctic climate, and as a result these vast tracts of brutal, icy beauty are threaded into the fabric of that nation's art, literature and psyche.

But threaded through it all is the real story, of real rural life more brutal than Judith and Malcolm's dancing lupins and penstemons would ever suggest.
"It was a murder, not a crime," is the consistent thread running throughout the film, as the women repeat the sentiment that, although their actions were seemingly brutal, they were also justifiable.
