Today the company will introduce a program called "Browse Inside" on its Web site (harpercollins.com), providing readers access to the first three pages of most chapters in 135 titles by 10 authors, including well-known writers like Michael Crichton, Lisa Scottoline, Bernard Cornwell and Paulo Coelho.
For now HarperCollins does not plan to sell books directly to customers online, but will rather use the "Browse Inside" feature as a way to lure readers to its Web pages, which will also include interviews, tour schedules, reading group guides, photographs and links to author blogs.

Mr. Murray said the company had invested "several million" dollars to digitize its backlist and get its new Web sites and "Browse Inside" functions up and running.
HarperCollins plans to provide authors, many of whom maintain their own Web sites, the technology to offer the "Browse Inside" function to fans.
The publisher also plans to negotiate deals with online social networking sites like MySpace and Friendster to allow users who are fans of particular authors to link to the "Browse Inside" function.
