I've recently been reading John Ruskin's great 19th-century work The Stones of Venice, and one of its fascinations is the way he portrays Venice not as a place of glorious light and pleasure, but as a brooding spectre on the ashen waters, its skies and lagoon shadowed by dread and decay.
