He, Broad director Eric Lander, and Mitch Guttman, who are also authors on the Nature Genetics paper, discovered a group of 5,000 lincRNAs.
The event began with speeches from some of the principals -- Los Angeles-based philanthropists Eli and Edythe L. Broad, MIT President Susan Hockfield, Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers and Broad Director Eric S. Lander -- who shared a long-range vision for the future of biomedicine.
The research, which appears in the Aug. 19 issue of Cell, was led by Broad Director and senior author Eric Lander and first author Piyush Gupta, a Whitehead Institute member and assistant professor of biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology who conducted this work as a postdoctoral researcher in Lander's lab.
"To see all these masterworks together is just — it's transcendent," said Broad Director Joanne Heyler, who was overseeing the installation of "Three Flags" along with Matthew Skopek, a painting conservator from the Whitney.
"We've had the Kusama piece 'The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away' since we opened in September 2015, and so we have some idea of the passion Kusama's work elicits from our audience," said Broad Director Joanne Heyler.
One of the titles it was up against was another Australian film with, shall we say, slightly broader appeal: director Peter Faiman's Crocodile Dundee.
