ATHENS — The road from Rethymno to my village in the mountains of central Crete — nearly abandoned now that an easier route has opened — is a living organism with its history, its patchwork of new and old pieces, memories of small and great joys, tragedies, miracles, its votive offerings, old detours taken over by the forest, its bridges, cliffs, landslides and endless turns.
The winds uprooted trees, downed electricity poles, disabled bridges, triggered landslides, and damaged several roofs.
Collapsed bridges and landslides on the roads have slowed down the delivery of assistance.
A 135 feet portion of the Pan-American Highway was washed out in the country's western portion, and another bridge was destroyed by a landslide between Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango; landslides also forced the closure of two roads in Quiché Department.
BEIJING — Rainstorms that are said to be the worst in five decades have flooded large areas of southwest China, washing out bridges, setting off a landslide that buried dozens of people and destroying a memorial to victims of the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province that flattened large parts of the same area.
