Near 205th St. there was an impressive Victorian tower of red brick, which from an overpass the writer saw was part of the Police Department's Fifty-second Precinct building, surely the gem of Webster Avenue.
It is early January, low season, and as the concrete overpasses and tall brick backs of the city's Georgian houses fall away, winter sun begins to stream through the windows.
Yet the self-styled duke of Dumbo, the unofficial mayor of the now thriving Brooklyn neighborhood Mr. Walentas carved out of the derelict factory buildings along the waterfront under the Manhattan Bridge overpass, is mostly water-phobic, happier with bricks than beaches.
THE slice of Brooklyn waterfront known as Dumbo ("down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass") sits between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, with 19th-century red-brick warehouses and streets paved with Belgian blocks.
