Microsatellite and SNP marker resources have been developed and applied in breeding programs for parentage assignment [ 6] and quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection with subsequent marker-assisted selection for favourable alleles, particularly for increased disease resistance (e.g.[ 7- 9]).
Here, using blood samples from an additional 311 and 214 individuals collected on Española Island in 2003 and 2007, respectively, we describe the outcome of the breeding program by determining parentage of the repatriated animals and by searching for genetic signatures of in situ reproduction.
We used artificial Gulf pipefish breeding aggregations and microsatellite-based parentage analysis to determine maternity.
The pedigree is based on long-term monitoring of breeding, banding at the nest, genetic parentage assignment based on 19 microsatellite markers and census data, as well as detailed data on individual reproductive success.
Parentage was assigned by breeding monitoring [28] and mini/microsatellite analysis [14], [15], [29, Robertson unpublished data].
Bulls and cows in breeding programmes are often routinely genotyped for parentage verification, estimation of genomic breeding values and a variety of other purposes.
