White cattle had long been characteristic of the Charolais region; recognition of the Charolais breed began about 1775.
In the 1970s the breed began to be revived through increased public interest.
A small number of Saluki kennels survived the war, and along with fresh imports belonging to a second wave of soldiers returning from the Middle East, the slow process of re-establishing the breed began again.
Over the years however, the numbers of the breed began to dwindle due both to a reduction in the duck population through those valley areas, and because of a switch in hunting – from a means to gather food for survival to that of recreation.
Genetic erosion due to crossbreeding is expected to have occurred since the breed began to decline about 35 years ago.
Not until the 19th century did modern-day breeds begin to take shape.
