DMH LepR-expressing neurons are known to project to numerous brain regions, including the PVH (Elmquist et al., 1998; Gautron et al., 2010).
Majority of 5-HT neurones are located within the dorsal and median raphe nuclei projecting to numerous brain regions including the thalamus, amygdala, cortex and the hippocampus, where they have important role in mnesic and cognitive functions.
Subsequently, the relay information projects into a higher brain region, including the limbic or cortical region, thereby interfering with the EEG synchronization [ 6, 9] and possibly inducing a cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway to reduce the inflammatory response [ 9].
For example, tracts from the medial cluster uniquely projected to medial frontal brain regions, including the medial PFC (BA10), orbitofrontal (BA11) and anterior cingulate (BA 24/32) and subgenual cingulate (BA 25) cortices.
These neurons project widely to several brain regions, including the hippocampus and amygdala, the key regions involved in the encoding and expression of emotional memory (Hu et al., 2007; Bass et al., 2013; Opmeer et al., 2013; Soya et al., 2013).
Another possibility is that there is an increased orexin projection to the target areas, since orexin neurons project to a wide range of brain areas including the inferior colliculus and the ventral cochlear nucleus [ 26].
