Further analyses will explore the effects of age (in 10-year age bands), sex, BMI (dichotomised around BMI of 30), baseline BP (in 10 mm Hg bands), number of medications prescribed at baseline and the presence of comorbidities at baseline (myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, obesity) on mean BP change and BP control at follow-up.
In the studies that reported BP change, there was no significant difference in BP decrease between ACEI/ARB and other antihypertensive drugs, suggesting that there is a specific reno-protective effect of ACEI/ARBs beyond their antihypertensive effect.
