Mr. Prose said his company would essentially buy those goods, giving merchants "trade credits" to buy something of value from Icon's other barter partners.
"EMusic is betting that this will all go to open content," says Leigh. "Besides, consumers won't buy something of no value, and these tracks only have value if you can play them somewhere besides the desktop".
So here we have a situation where an investor buys something of no value in the hope of selling it for a greater amount to someone who believes the same.
In retrospect, it seems clear that Mr. Case suspected the bubble was near deflating and that he'd best use his inflated America Online stock to buy something of lasting value while he could.
