On poor sites, predicted diameters for both spruce and pine range from 24 to 42 cm.
There was both spruce and birch ingrowth but spruces grew faster than birches, which had difficulties to penetrate to the dominant canopy layer.
In Litschau, the maximum values observed were exceeded by two models (Silva and Moses) for both spruce and pine.
Some sites were planted only with spruce, other only with pine, and several both with spruce and pine.
Moreover, previous studies have shown several hundred genes are involved in induced defenses in both Sitka spruce and Norway spruce (Ralph, Yueh, et al. 2006; Lippert et al. 2009).
In Norway spruce a host of defense related proteins are upregulated in response to pathogen attack and other stressors, and the chitinase PaChi4 has proven to be a particularly useful marker for local and systemic defence response in both Norway spruce and Sitka spruce [ 23- 25].
The presence of many small diameter trees in our database required the development of a new equations We developed allometirc biomass equations for small trees by sampling 60 small diameter Sitka spruce and western hemlock and calculating the total biomass based on whole tree harvest and weighing (Additional file 2: Appendix B).
For the next four decades, these are: 1). a high and nearly constant level of growing stock in private forests, 2). a growing stock in the state forests comparable to the level of private forests, 3). a further increase of growing stocks for coniferous tree species (as current stem diameters for spruce and pine in the dominant age classes are below the threshold values for harvesting), and.
The largest discrepancies are found for spruce and pine on poor sites, where the height:diameter ratios predicted by Silva and BWIN are lower than the reference equations for almost all diameters.
Although riparian and upland plots were both dominated by lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, and subalpine fir, they differed in relative proportions of lodgepole pine (higher in uplands) and Engelmann spruce (higher in riparian areas).
Figure 5 shows these general findings exemplarily for Norway spruce and European beech, both without a distinction by mixed or monospecific stands.
