Indeed, arguing from the non homology of the membranes of Archaea and Bacteria in favour of a non cellular ancestor and the independent emergence of the two types of lipids [ 22, 153, 163] overlooks the fact that all organisms can synthesize both fatty acids and isoprenoids, and that, at least in theory, it is possible to retrodict both pathways to an ancestral mode of lipid synthesis [ 104].
Both are pathways to a truth, but there is a profound difference in process.
