Gtr2 and Ego3 are both members of complexes, Gtr1/ 2 and Ego1/ 3. Normally one would expect that abolishing one member of a two-member complex would generate a functional phenotype similar to abolishing the other member.
But because amino acid replacements in the TF are permissive for mutations in the RE, and subsequent RE mutations are permissive for replacements in the protein, both members of the complex can explore regions of their own sequence space and reach genotypes that were not previously available to either.
In the current study, T. denticola and T. forsythia, both members of the red complex, did show significant association with periodontitis, which is consistent with the literature.
