Digital data from the regions of interest (ROIs) were captured in both hemispheres from four consecutive sections (each 120 μm apart) using a Leica DMRB microscope and an Olympus DP70 Camera.
We measured the volume of intact hippocampal tissue within both hemispheres from cross-sectional outlines taken at every 200 µm throughout the anteroposterior extent of the hippocampal formation.
In contrast, there were significant negative connections from pOp back to vOT in both hemispheres, from right-to-left pOp, and all self-connections (Fig. 2 a and Table 4).
As in the extraction of 3D SfM (Orban et al. 1999) activation extended, in both hemispheres, from occipito-temporal cortex, onto the lateral occipital cortex, into the occipital pat of the IPS, finally reaching the dorsal part of that sulcus.
The ischemic and non-ischemic hemispheres from each block were separated, weighed for wet weight, baked at 90±2°C for 1 week, and weighed again for dry weight.
Upon sagittal bisection, a hemispheres from each case was cut into coronal slabs, which were frozen overnight at −80°C and then sealed in plastic bags for long-term storage at −80°C.
Voxels were classified as white or gray matter, and cutting planes were selected to separate the hemispheres from each other.
Data were averaged from both hemispheres of each animal and then mean and standard error of the mean (SEM) calculated from three animals per age group.
Volumes (V) were calculated as V = ΣA · i · d, according to Cavalieri´s principle, with A representing the sum of areas from both hemispheres of each section, i the interval between the sections, and d the section thickness, respectively.
For each animal, images from both hemispheres were taken from 12 coronal sections (i.e. 24 images) along the length of the perirhinal cortex from AP −2.76 to −5.76 (Paxinos & Watson, 2005).
