Other research has looked in more depth aspects of healthy environments with more technical projects examining physical activity and food access (funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and National Institutes of Health including the Twin Cities Walking Study, TREC-IDEA, ECHO, EAT projects).
"We repeated that with urban scenes, from fountains in squares to canals running through the city, and once again people hugely preferred the urban environments with more water in them". Images with green space received a postive response, as Ulrich has found.
Our approach is suitable for use in real environments by focusing on the creation of paths through environments with more free space.
We found that, despite declining physical function, older adults report greater independence in instrumental activities when they live in environments with more land-use diversity.

Contrary to their hypothesis, arthropods in hotter, drier environments with more pavement and lower biodiversity like those found in medians between streets consumed between two and three times more food waste than their counterparts living in parks.
"In my opinion, a more likely explanation for what was seen here is that people who grew up in these environments with more conflict have a lower expectation of other people," Hong says.
