Both cell types have been described to have different properties that may play a role in regeneration.
Both cell types have stereocilia projections arranged in bundles but the shape and arrangement of the bundles is different in the two systems [35], [36].
It is interesting that two different types of cells (fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells) exhibit similar threshold stresses for Rac activation, suggesting that the setpoint for the enzyme activation is the threshold strain (deformation), since both cell types have similar softness (or its inverse, stiffness).
Furthermore, analysis of cell proliferation by 3H-thymidine uptake revealed that both cell types have a similar responsiveness to MPA or growth factors such as FGF-2 [41], and both display similar sensitivity to the inhibitors PD98059 and LY294002, as shown here (Figure 2C).
