Weisman (Editorial Observer, Aug. 12): I would never categorize Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who is running for governor of Maryland, as "boring". Qualities like "smart, driven and caring" are rarely evident in American politics, and whoever possesses these qualities could never be boring in any setting.
But, most of all, they stood for not being bored, a quality that architecture will always need.
With no wars, pandemics, or societal collapse (at least as usually defined) to explain it, researchers have had to look at small-bore, quality-of-life factors to explain the tragedy – one thrown into especially high relief by the revelation that young, high-school dropout black women now outlive their white peers.
Such a tone quality becomes boring if heard for a long time.
