The birds had always been eaten by squirrels, hawks, bears etc, but their huge abundance made negligible the impact of local predators.

As you show each image, ask the class if anyone knows what each animal is called ("bird," "bear," etc).. Write the word on the front board and, after all the images have been reviewed, distribute small whiteboards if available.
Another idea is to embroider (sew) along the signature, this works great for "signature bears" etc.
