Here, we observed without exception that the accumulation of intermembrane fluid appeared to have flattened the IMM bordering the swelled mitochondrial matrix (Figs. 6 and 8).
In some regions, the vesicles appear to fuse with the sheath cell plasma membrane bordering the cilia, suggesting that matrix material may be secreted into an extracellular sheath lumen (Ward et al., 1975; Perkins et al., 1986; Perens and Shaham, 2005).
The swollen mitochondrial matrices bordering the regions indicated by "s" in panels E and F of Fig. 8 might represent a progression of the previous stage.
The nestedness is calculated by identifying the border dividing the matrix in two areas containing respectively most ones and most zeroes, that is exactly the role of the Purchase Function.
But at some point, this technology could cross the border from The Matrix into medical reality.
The differences from the original algorithm are (i) all the borders of the matrix are initialized to infinity to ensure that the alignment starts at the endpoint and (ii) the scores can drop <0 to ensure the found startpoint is connected to the endpoint.
