"A strange and buffer cry", the words that appear on the book, lack the same impact.
My favourite headlines typically involve a play on words, tweaking a well-known expression or quotation, such as "Book lack in Ongar" (funding cuts hit Essex libraries) or "Drop dead, gorgeous" (a feature about office jealousy).
"Book lack in Ongar", about a shortage of resources in Essex libraries, remains one of the all-time great headlines, but it only works if you get the reference to John Osborne's 1956 play Look Back in Anger (or at least it did until Oasis helpfully recorded a song called Don't Look Back in Anger).
