In cortical bone, high bone turnover, as observed after the menopause, is associated with decreased BMD, increased cortical porosity due to increased bone remodeling in the Haversian canal, decreased cortical thickness due to increased endocortical bone remodeling, and decreased mean degree of mineralization (Hedlund et al 1989; Bousson et al 2000; Boivin et al 2000; Szulc et al 2006).
The increase in absolute and relative cortical area fraction and cortical thickness due to skeletal maturation in the control bones was higher in Sost KO compared to LC mice (Fig. 2).
There were, however, significant increases in the radiation dose (P < 0.00) for both projections due to the slight increase in the compressed breast thickness due to pad thickness.
Bone drift, probably due to formation and shifting of the trochanters, can be seen in section 3. Towards the proximal epiphysis, cortex thickness decreases, but the amount of secondary cancellous bone increases due to remodeling resulting from bone drift.
In the two tibial cases, nailing was carried out shortly after the fixator had been removed and after refracture of the regenerated bone had occurred due to insufficient cortical thickness.
This implant was used for all primary and secondary (revision) femoral reconstructions, except for cases in which the remaining bone was inadequate due to insufficient cortical thickness, patient age of more than 70 years, metastatic disease, or prior irradiation of the femur (Table 1).
An important function of bone remodelling is the repair of microcracks accumulating in the bone matrix due to mechanical loading.
Bone necrosis due to any cause can lead to bone collapse/fracture.
A segmental bone defect may result from bone loss due to the trauma itself or due to debridement for osteomyelitis.
