In addition to local stromal interactions within the tumor micro-environment, tumors appear to have a systemic effect that can influence cancer progression, primarily via the stimulation of bone marrow cells [ 3].
Bones that can be affected are the shoulder blade scapula, humerus or the collar bone.
Several previous studies suggested that ANXA2 can influence bone formation in a variety of ways including regulation of osteoprogenitor proliferation, differentiation, and responsiveness to cytokines (Deng et al., 2011a; Pandey et al., 2012; Genetos et al., 2014).
Cxcl5, but not Cxcl1, increased GCSF mRNA in both sexes (Fig. 4e), implicating that Cxcl5 can influence bone marrow neutrophil numbers and stimulation.
Not only the bone matrix is altered in OA but recent studies have demonstrated that a putative factor(s) produced by OA subchondral bone cells can influence cartilage metabolism [ 12].

There is also evidence that the osteoblasts in subchondral bone can influence chondrocyte and cartilage metabolism more directly, leading to abnormal remodelling of OA cartilage [ 15, 16].
It has been reported that in cases with generalized OA, the width of the radius and the metacarpal is significantly larger than in controls, and bone width can influence bone mass results expressed as BMD or % cortical area [ 22].
