A total of 129 P. aeruginosa carbapenem-resistant clinical isolates identified over a 12-year period, from 1998 to 2012, recovered from 109 patients, hospitalized in the Clinical and Surgical nursery, Intensive Care, Burned, Haematology and Bone Marrow units at Hospital das Clinicas-FMUSP were evaluated.
Active surveillance of all HAIs was performed by trained infection control nurses using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDCC) definitions [ 23] in the following units: bone marrow transplantation unit, step-down units, adult intensive care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.

An outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) occurred in May through June 2000 involving two units: the bone marrow transplant unit and the general pediatric intensive care unit PICU.
