The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical stresses over the bone and hardware after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) fixed with standard titanium or locking plate/screws using finite element analysis.
Bone and hardware samples were then sent separately for standard quantitative microbiological analysis.
The outcome measures were the presence and quantity of bacteria on the bone and hardware samples, normalised for the mass of the sample processed.
All samples in animals treated with 2 mg/Kg were infected, and no animals treated with 10 mg/kg of cefazolin had any bacteria detectible on their bone or hardware.
