The Sedlec Ossuary, or Bone Church, in the town of Kutna Hora, less than an hour east of Prague, will strike you as a rather measly affair from the outside, but venture inside this gothic chapel and you will be greeted by an astonishing sight – the skeletons of around 40,000 plague victims plastered from top to bottom.
The designer created a backdrop that recalled ancient ossuaries, like the disturbing but mesmerizing "bone church" on the outskirts of Prague or the Capuchin crypt in Rome, where generations of monks laid out the remains of their dead forebears in an eerie anatomy lesson.
The bone church is a 15 min walk from the main station in a suburb called Sedlec.
At its creepy "bone church", whose interior is decorated with the bones of 40,000 victims of the Great Plague and the Hussite Wars, you can literally stare death in the face.
