Over 70% of breast cancer patients present bone metastasis at autopsy [ 1].
To investigate the molecular basis for these changes, we performed microarray gene expression profiling of bone obtained at autopsy from individuals with no evidence of joint disease (control) and from individuals undergoing joint replacement surgery for either degenerative hip OA, or fractured neck of femur (osteoporosis [OP]).
Osteomyelitis induced by the high inocula was associated with severe local macroscopic changes at autopsy, with bone marrow involvement, bone deformation, and extension to the muscle (localized abscesses, myositis, sinus tract) and joint (purulent arthritis) in some rabbits (Figure 3, Table 1).
Perhaps sifting through the bones and the autopsy report will yield some clues, and perhaps save the life of the next climate bill that crosses our path.

Human cortical bones were collected during autopsy at the Forensic Science Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark and stored in 70% EtOH at 4°C. 2 cm long bone sticks from one individual, were drilled from the central part of femoral midshafts specimens.
