Forest canopy structure consists of the complex spatial arrangement of the foliage, branches, and boles of trees.
The bole of a tree consists essentially of fibres with a minimum of nonfibrous elements, such as pith and parenchyma cells.
When a bole of a tree that has been shaded for a number of years is suddenly exposed to light, new buds, called epicormic buds, may be initiated.
To calculate MSPB%, the bole of every tree was divided into ten relative height portions 0 to 10%%, 10 to 20%%,…, and 90 to 100%% (note that a tree bole is continuous and hence the endpoint of one relative height potion is the beginning of the next one).

The largest decreases for both species occurred in the bole component of trees in advanced stages of decay.
