Serial 8 micron thick sections were cut with a Leitz microtome, stained with a routine Harris hematoxylin and eosin stain or trichrome blue, photographed using an Olympus BH2 Fluorescent microscope with a SpotRT digital camera (Olympus, Temecula, CA), and analyzed using Image-Pro Plus 4.1 software (DataCell Ltd ,North Chelmsford, MA).

When you try to picture Earth, you might recall the iconic blue marble photograph taken on the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, or perhaps now you visualize Google Earth or the beautiful shots of our planet in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity.
The images are part of a photographic lineage going back to the Apollo 17 "Blue Marble" photograph of 1972.
Like the pale blue dot photograph captured by Voyager 1, the compilation record was a mirror to hold up to ourselves.
Taking its name from the Pale Blue Dot photograph of Earth made famous by Carl Sagan, Bluedot's unusual programme hopes to inspire the sense of curiosity and wonderment suggested by its surroundings.
On the one hand, it provokes the same feelings of awe and humility as Nasa's famous "Pale Blue Dot" photograph of the planet Earth, in which, in Carl Sagan's words, "everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of... the aggregate of our joy and suffering" can be seen "on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam".
The first such image was the famous "pale blue dot" photograph taken 23 years ago by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft when it was even farther away from home -- a distance of 4 billion miles.
