The present study was based on a sub-cohort of 2, 500 individuals who were selected at random from all participants with blood sample available at baseline of the EPIC-Potsdam study population as part of a separate case-cohort studies on biomarkers and risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases [ 30, 31].

Individuals were eligible if the following inclusion criteria were met: younger than 60 years of age at baseline and younger than 65 years at follow-up, blood sample available, had baseline information on diet, weight and height and follow-up information on weight, stable smoking habits, no cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and diabetes, and an annual weight change not more than 5 kg/year.
All but one of participants had symptoms compatible with the acute retroviral syndrome and the first blood sample available for immunological studies (baseline) was drawn at a median of 12 days (range 5 27) after onset of symptoms.
