One of the most beautiful paintings of earth, on earth, is here: Jacob van Ruisdael's 1670s "View of Haarlem With Bleaching Grounds".
In Jacob van Ruisdael's "Bleaching Grounds of Overveen, With Haarlem in the Distance," the figures in the manicured fields are tiny.
She's joined by four Rembrandts, Jacob van Ruisdael's out-of-this-world "View of Haarlem With Bleaching Grounds," and — maybe the star among stars — Carel Fabritius's palpitating little "Goldfinch".
"View of Haarlem With Bleaching Grounds," which depicts new linen stretched out on the ground to whiten in the sun, was painted by the 17th-century Dutch master of landscapes Jacob van Ruisdael, whose paintings are on view now in a retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Besides a pair of magisterial portraits by Hals and two biblical scenes and two portraits by Rembrandt, the exhibition will include a picture of drunken revelry by the genre painter Jan Steen; a small painting of a goldfinch by Carel Fabritius that is a miracle of trompe l'oeil illusion; and "View of Haarlem With Bleaching Grounds," an expansive landscape by Jacob van Ruisdael.
