She's one of four black students at the center of the film, another one of whom is Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P Bell), a big man on campus and the head of the traditionally black residence hall, which is being broken up through the university's "randomization" of housing.
The film takes place at the fictional Winchester University, an Ivy-League-type school whose small population of black students has been roiled by new housing rules that have effectively eliminated the school's only traditionally black residence hall, Armstrong Parker House.
She was brought up in a standard wood-frame house in the part of town designated for black residences.
