Balsam of Peru, a fragrant, thick, deep brown or black fluid used in perfumery, is a true balsam, the product of a lofty leguminous tree, Myroxylon pereirae, growing in a limited area in El Salvador and introduced into Sri Lanka.
The leftover liquid — a black fluid containing dissolved minerals and chemicals, known as sludge or slurry — is often disposed of in vast lagoons or through injection into abandoned mines.
A smartly dressed woman in her 30s rushed over to the witness stand and poured a bottle of black fluid over the detective chief inspector who was describing shortcomings of the police child protection unit responsible for the case.

In zebrafish, cells known as melanophores contain reservoirs of black fluid; muscle contractions pump this fluid to the skin's surface, where the liquid spreads out, darkening the fish.
To reverse the effect, the researchers turned on a second pump, which sent a supply of clear liquid into the chamber and pushed the black fluid back into its reservoir.
Pathological findings: Analogous to the hepato-renal pouch on the right side of the abdomen, free fluid might collect in the spleno-renal pouch and is visible as an anechoic, black fluid (Figure 5c).
