He was soon good enough to play with local dance groups and to work in the house band at the Howard theatre, Washington's leading black entertainment arena.
The $3.8 million center, primarily funded by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority with money from Atlantic City casinos, sits a few hundred yards from a two-year-old veterans memorial, a black granite arena bearing the names of 1,553 state residents killed or missing in action in Vietnam.

But it is also, as Dr. Black pointed out, the arena for two parties, two philosophies, two historical narratives, two analytical lenses.
