The industry group said it hoped the combination of improved biosecurity on farms, new methods in the slaughterhouse and new technologies would help reduce the level of campylobacter in chickens over time.
"Poultry producers have looked at every part of their production chain to see where new ideas and technology can combat this very complex bacteria: improved biosecurity on farms, new methods in the slaughterhouse, and brand new technologies being developed such as SonoSteam, rapid surface chilling, and roast-in-the-bag packaging.
They also quantified infectious virus in bio-aerosols and evaluated a method of biosecurity designed to reduce this risk.
The Bush administration pushed hard after 9/11 and the anthrax mailings to create such a code, the key element of which is the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, the body that recommended censorship of the methods used in the Dutch and Wisconsin H5N1 experiments.
The availability of better methods will invariably lead to enhanced biosecurity and help government, policy makers, and safety professionals in general to provide more effective strategies to ensure public health and safety.
The reported primers and methods will prove valuable for ecological studies, biosecurity and commercial plant, soil or water (e.g. irrigation water) testing as well as the wider metagenomic sampling of this fascinating component of microbial pathogen diversity.
