Most functional genomics evaluations derive gold standard positives from functional classification schemes that capture associations of genes or proteins with specific biological processes as reported in the literature [ 7, 10, 12, 14- 18].
After data acquisition, the information on the functional genes, including location, biological processes, regulation mode reported in the literature, was manually curated from more than 40 000 research articles retrieved from PubMed (till 1 March 2014).
