Although methyl-CpG binding proteins are expressed at varying levels in a wide variety of tissues and corresponding cDNAs can be detected in embryonic libraries, there is currently no evidence that mammalian methyl-CpG binding proteins play any role in embryonic development.
We have found that mRNAs encoding RNA binding proteins are expressed at ~4× the level in the germ line than the soma.
The conserved Musashi (Msi) family of RNA binding proteins are expressed in stem/progenitor and cancer cells, but generally absent from differentiated cells, consistent with a role in cell state regulation.
Additionally, RNA binding proteins are expressed at a higher level in the germ line than the soma, suggesting that the control of gene expression through RNA metabolism is more predominant in the germ line than the soma.
Taking into account the number of tags found in each library, we found that transcripts of these RNA binding proteins are expressed >4 fold in the germ line than the soma; 3267 tags were identified in the germline SAGE library, whereas only 775 were identified in the soma library (Fisher's exact p-value < 0.001).

Intriguingly, a spatially restricted expression of taste receptors has been described for the wing [4] and, surprisingly, a large gene family of odorant binding proteins is expressed not only in olfactory organs as expected, but also in wing gustatory sensilla [5].
Sarcolipin, an atrial-specific Ca+2 binding protein was expressed 245.97 fold higher in the atria than the ventricles.
We found that the cocultured UtLM cells produced significantly higher levels of IGF-BP-3 and IGF-BP-4, while this binding protein was expressed marginally by UtLM cells and FB cultured alone.
In contrast, a novel 45 kDa protein was shown to strongly interact with C4b-binding protein suggesting that in B. recurrentis at least two different receptors for binding of the two complement regulators, CFH and C4b-binding protein, are expressed (unpublished).
Other evolutionarily conserved genes, including calmodulin and a calcium-binding protein, are expressed continuously along the length of the mantle within both the inner fold and the anterior crease of the outer fold, while others, such as ferritin, are expressed only in the outer fold.
Of these, a gene encoding an insect chitin-binding protein was expressed at about 120-fold higher levels in adult males reared on media supplemented with WGO.
