In a tristable rotaxane bearing urea, ammonium, and phosphine oxide (listed in descending binding ability) stations on the thread, macrocycle shuttling could be induced by the binding of an acetate anion to the urea and subsequently to the ammonium site, which sequentially blocked these higher affinity stations and forced the macrocycle to bind to the weakly coordinating phosphine oxide station.
However, upon auxin binding, the side chain of Phe82 could be induced into a favorable orientation (red line in Figure 8B) to accommodate the subsequent binding of Aux/IAA.
