This result was consistent when the datasets were compared between time points, with ∼50% of mid-bloom transcripts being homologous with ∼90% of post-bloom transcripts (Table S3).
Though the number of families remained the same between time points (with the exception of a single Siskiwit family in the final time period), the within-family sample sizes decreased which may have had an impact on our ability to detect significant genetic variation for traits at the later sampling periods.
There were no significant differences between time points, with the exception of FAS scores, which were highest in 2014.
Interestingly, in our previous study we observed that the decreased ability of serum from SLE patients to degrade NETs is mostly not permanent but changes between time points with different disease activity [ 8].
Parametric data will be presented as mean differences of change scores between time points, with 95% confidence intervals and effect sizes (calculated as Cohen's d i.e. mean of the treatment effect divided by the standard deviation of the controls).
In parallel to the frequent fluctuations in whole body bioluminescence, the magnitude of signal from individual foci was also highly dynamic between time points, with foci appearing and disappearing over the course of a single day; few foci were detectable for more than 24 h (Fig. 3D and E and Fig. S3).

It is difficult to determine whether colony half-life changes with infant's age because the length of the interval between time points is strongly correlated with age: the half-life/age interaction is heavily confounded with the possibility that the hazard of serotype loss is not uniform with respect to the colony's age.
In one study [ 2] hyperoxia was defined on the basis of a time-weighted SpO2 >98%; this parameter was calculated as the mean SpO2 between consecutive time points multiplied by the period of time between these time points, with the sum of such time-weighted values being divided by total time to obtain a time-weighted average.
