In order to examine the effects of migration, we studied pairs of co-cultures and coupled them via transfer of cells between the two patches of each pair.
Five possible mass-balance transformations of C occurring between the two patches were explicitly modeled: net primary production (NPP), decomposition, erosion, transport induced mineralization, and deposition.
