What is the relationship between computer simulation and experiment?
Since the interest in simulation is growing among philosophers of science, the relationship between computer simulation and thought experiments has started to attract attention (see Behmel, 2001, pp. 98 108; Di Paolo et al., 2000; El Skaf and Imbert, 2013; Lenhard 2011; Stäudner, 1998).
The relationship between computer simulations and experiment, between theories and data, and the role of models in modern particle physics are scientific issues.
As Parker (2009a) points out, in both experiment and simulation, we can have relevant similarities between computer simulations and target systems, and that's what matters.
Pervasive shadowing is, however, not sufficient to ensure a generic correspondence between computer simulations and "true dynamics".
An influential strand of attempts to come to grips with this question exploits similarities between traditional experiments and computer simulations, which raises vexing questions about the relation between computer simulations and experiments (Barberousse, Franceschelli and Imbert 2009, Morgan 2003, Morrison 2009, Parker 2008, 2009, Winsberg 2003).
