We used a 2-sample t-test [36] to test for differences in bird abundance between category 1 (control leks with no development) and 4 categories of development.

Although CKD stage 3 developed in only 22 patients during follow-up, a strong dose-response relation between baseline serum uric acid categories and development of CKD stage 3 is evident in Fig. 1 B.
